Theo van Achterberg writes:
Tom Defloor was a professor of Nursing Science at Ghent University in Belgium. He worked at the Nursing Science Department from 1994 onwards and built his academic career after completing his PhD thesis. Tom’s strong focus on pressure ulcer prevention and treatment resulted in innovative clinical trials others believed to be impossible. A long list of international publications resulted from these studies. In addition, Tom took on various other research topics such as malnutrition and therapy adherence. Also, much of his time went into training many nurses and nurse researchers and the development of international guidelines for nursing practice. Tom was a keen scientist and a great ambassador for nursing science. His work and spirit will be missed by his colleagues at Ghent University as well as by nurses and nursing scientists in Europe and throughout the world.
